The construction industry faces the challenge of providing practical training for skilled workers whilst also assuming environmental and social responsibility. The Green Circle project creates the right framework for this: it develops standardised micro-certificates across Europe that strengthen vocational training in the construction sector whilst firmly embedding the principle of sustainability.

Micro-certificates are short, modular qualifications that can be flexibly integrated into initial and continuing vocational training. They enable specific skills to be acquired in a targeted manner and immediately applied in everyday working life.

For trainees, companies and educational institutions, this means: Europe-wide recognised quality standards, practical content and a clear link to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.

Micro-certificates: What they offer for construction training

Micro-certificates are compact, practice-oriented learning modules that specifically teach certain skills. They offer the construction industry numerous advantages:

  • Flexibility: Short modules promote lifelong learning and expand existing training programmes.
  • Practical relevance: The skills taught can be applied directly on the construction site or in the workplace.
  • Comparability: Uniform standards ensure that qualifications can be recognised across Europe.
  • Sustainability: The modules focus on ‘green skills’ to strengthen sustainable thinking and action in the construction sector, thereby supporting the transition to a green economy.

In this way, Green Circle helps to promote professional development, strengthen the skilled workforce and facilitate the international exchange of knowledge.

How Green Circle contributes to the SDGs

The 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) form an important guiding principle for Green Circle. The project’s work packages address key aspects of these goals and translate them into concrete measures for the construction industry.

The following outlines how selected SDGs are linked to the project activities:

SDG 4 – Quality Education

Relevant work packages: WP3, WP4, WP5

Green Circle is developing a model for micro-certifications, designing training courses and testing them across Europe with learners. Work packages WP3, WP4 and WP5 make a direct contribution to this:

  • They create flexible further training programmes that can be easily integrated into professional workflows.
  • They enable targeted learning that is geared towards the actual requirements of sustainable construction practice.
  • They offer structured training in green skills that construction workers need to remain future-proof in the labour market.

In doing so, Green Circle strengthens vocational training in Europe and promotes lifelong learning – a central pillar of SDG 4.

SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities

Relevant work package: WP3

As part of WP3, a competence and qualification model for sustainable construction is being developed. This model describes the skills required for the planning, implementation and maintenance of sustainable buildings and infrastructure.

Green Circle thereby supports:

  • the use of resource-efficient materials,
  • the promotion of energy-efficient construction methods,
  • the sustainable development of urban and rural areas.

In this way, SDG 11 is implemented in practice through initial and continuing education.

SDG 13 – Climate Action

Relevant work packages: WP2–WP4

Climate protection is a central component of the project architecture. In WP2–WP4:

  • the skills required for the green transition are identified,
  • training courses focusing on environmental sustainability are developed,
  • curriculum content is designed so that it can be permanently integrated into training systems within the construction industry.

In this way, Green Circle makes a direct contribution to strengthening and establishing climate-friendly construction practices across Europe in the long term.

SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals

Relevant work packages: WP1 and WP6

Partnership-based collaboration is a central element of Green Circle. WP1 and WP6 coordinate European cooperation between:

  • vocational training institutions,
  • companies in the construction industry,
  • industry associations,
  • policy-makers.

This close collaboration enables the joint development of high-quality micro-certificates and ensures that the project results are disseminated and utilised across Europe.

This fulfils SDG 17, which emphasises strong partnerships as key to sustainable development.

SDGs as a guideline for sustainable construction qualifications

Green Circle demonstrates how European education projects can provide practical support for the global Sustainable Development Goals. By combining micro-certifications, digital learning opportunities and a strong network, the project makes a concrete contribution to better education, climate-friendly construction practices and more sustainable urban development.

This results in vocational training that is not only technically sound but also forward-looking and sustainable in its approach. Micro-certificates are an effective tool for making construction training in Europe more modern, flexible and environmentally conscious. Green Circle combines vocational qualifications with environmental responsibility – thereby creating a solid foundation for the skilled workers of tomorrow.
