Europe’s construction sector is undergoing a major transformation under the European Green Deal, which demands a workforce skilled in sustainable building, energy efficiency, and circular construction practices. Traditional education systems, often rigid and slow to adapt, struggle to equip professionals with these emerging competencies quickly enough. As a result, microcredentials have gained importance as short, focused, and flexible learning formats that can respond rapidly to evolving skill needs.

Earlier findings from the Green Circle project (Deliverable D2.12) revealed that the European microcredential landscape remains fragmented and inconsistent. While some countries have well-integrated frameworks recognized by industry and education providers, others rely heavily on informal or non-accredited training. Stakeholders emphasized the urgent need for standardization and a unified taxonomy to improve recognition, transparency, and cross-border mobility of skills.

This deliverable addresses that need by presenting a structured taxonomy for green skills microcredentials. The taxonomy classifies credentials by scope, educational depth, and complexity, aligning them with European qualification standards and mapping clear pathways between informal, vocational, and formal education. Validated through real-world examples, the taxonomy is both practical and scalable, offering a coherent foundation for harmonizing green skills development across Europe’s construction sector.
